AUSTRAL SUMMER INSTITUTE VIII (ASI VIII) Automated plankton recognition: State of the art, calibration and practice Sediment biogeochemistry: From the coast to the abyss Ecology and diversity of marine microorganisms (ECODIM V) Oceanography and climate change: Past, present and future scenarios www.udec.cl/oceanoudec/oceanografia November 27, 2007 – January 26, 2008 Universidad de Concepción – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - Fundación Andes Cooperative Program and UNESCO IOC Chair in Oceanography The Department of Oceanography and the FONDAP COPAS Center are pleased to announce the Austral Summer Institute VIII (ASI VIII) to be held at the University of Concepción, in December 2007 and January 2008. ASI VIII will be dedicated to a) Automated plankton recognition, b) Sediment biogeochemistry, c) Marine microorganisms, and d) Oceanography and climate change (course contents may be examined at www.udec.cl/oceanoudec/oceanografia). Graduate, advanced undergraduate students and professionals in the areas of the courses are invited to apply. Fundación Andes will cover room, board, and national transportation costs for selected participants. Additional funding is being sought to cover airfare for international participants. Applications for ASI VIII must include: 1) the application form, 2) curriculum vitae (summarized to 2 pages) with educational and work histories, and 3) a brief (one page) letter of intent indicating the scientific interests of the applicant and how s/he hopes to benefit from participating in this activity. The applications (in English) can be submitted by e-mail, fax, or mail and must be received no later than Friday September 28th 2007. We encourage electronic applications. The tuition fee is US$ 250. Fellowships are available for qualified participants. The selection of applicants is highly competitive, and special attention is paid to the applicant’s potential as a future scientist and his/her academic achievements to date. Maximum capacity is 15 students per course.
